Wentworth Woodhouse ( Rotherham)

A Relaxing, Enriching Day Out at Wentworth Woodhouse -

The estate’s history ties closely to the powerful Wentworth family, who held land here for centuries. In the early 1600s, Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, one of King Charles I’s chief advisers, lived on the site. After Strafford was executed during the English Civil War, the property passed through various family branches.

He embarked on a massive rebuilding project that ultimately produced two great houses under one roof:The West Front – built first in a Baroque style. The East Front – added later in sweeping Palladian style and stretching an astonishing 606 feet, making it one of the longest façades of any country house in Europe.

In the 1940s, the government ordered opencast coal mining almost directly up to the house’s steps—an act widely considered politically motivated. This caused significant landscape damage .Rising costs made it increasingly difficult to maintain. After World War II, part of the property was leased to a teachers’ training college, keeping the building in use but not fully preserved. The Fitzwilliam family finally sold the estate in 1989.

After years of uncertainty, the house was purchased in 2017 by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, which began a long-term, £100+ million restoration project. Their work continues today, stabilising the structure, restoring grand rooms, opening more areas to the public, and reimagining the estate as a cultural and community hub.
