Cliveden has long been at the heart of British history, where royalty, politics, and the most influential figures of society have left their mark. Once the epicentre of British high society, the estate is steeped in stories of power, privilege, and intrigue. Over the centuries, generations of the Royal Family have sought the comfort and privacy of Cliveden, while the estate also played host to political gatherings, influential discussions, and the glittering yet sometimes scandalous parties that shaped public lifemost famously becoming synonymous with the Profumo Affair.
Royal Connections
Cliveden has welcomed numerous members of the British Royal
Family and distinguished guests from across the globe. From
King George I to Queen Elizabeth II, its grand rooms and
stunning grounds have served as a backdrop for state visits,
private retreats, and historic moments. The estates rich
royal heritage intertwines with its role as a political and
social hub, making Cliveden not just a place of beauty, but a
witness to centuries of history, power, and intrigue.
Purchasing the house in 1893, the American millionaire William Waldorf Astor set about restyling the house with only the best and most expensive materials of the day, along with the acquisitions he had acquired on his travels abroad.
Look out for the magnificent stone chimney piece in the Great Hall, purchased by Astor from the famous sale of the Spitzer collection in Paris in 1892. Ending your visit in the French Dining room you will marvel at the Rococo Boiseries panelling from the Chateau d' Asniéres, a hunting lodge dating back to 1750.
Head to the western side of the Proprty for a surprise; the unassuming domed building overlooking the river houses a wonderfully ornate chapel, also known as the Octagon Temple.Then have a relaxing time in the beautiful cafe.
