A visit to Ham House in Surrey is like stepping back in time into the heart of 17th-century England. Situated on the banks of the River Thames in Richmond upon Thames, this magnificent property is one of the best-preserved Stuart houses in the country. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and intrigue of the past, with its grand architecture, beautifully landscaped gardens, and rich history.
Ham House was originally built in the 1620s by Sir Thomas Vavasour, but its most famous for its association with the 17th-century aristocracy, particularly the influential Duchess of Lauderdale, Elizabeth Murray. She and her husband, John Maitland, the Duke of Lauderdale, bought the house in 1671, and under her ownership, Ham House became one of the most fashionable places in London.
Elizabeth's influence and personal style are still felt today, and many of the houses original furnishings, artworks, and tapestries remain intact, offering a snapshot of life among the English elite during the Stuart period.
The house contains magnificent rooms that have been carefully preserved, with intricate wood panelling, restored fireplaces, and furnishings that reflect the wealth and power of the people who lived here.
The Great Hall is particularly impressive, with its large windows overlooking the Thames. The long gallery, once a space for entertaining guests, features portraits of the royal family and nobility, showcasing the grand social circles that the inhabitants of Ham House moved in.
The State Apartments are another highlight, with period furniture, tapestries, and an extensive collection of artwork that once adorned the walls, adding to the sense of grandeur.
The Gardens: formal gardens at Ham House are just as impressive as the house itself. Designed in the 17th century, they offer a peaceful escape with beautifully manicured grounds, flowerbeds, and sweeping vistas of the River Thames. You can explore the walled gardens, which are laid out in a series of terraces, and the Orangery, where the exotic plants and fruits of the time were once grown. The gardens are a wonderful place for a leisurely stroll, with their combination of formal design and natural beauty.
The River Thames runs along the edge of the property, and the views from the house and gardens across the water are absolutely stunning. You might even spot a boat or two passing by, adding to the tranquil atmosphere.
Dont miss the kitchen garden, which is a wonderful recreation of how gardens would have been cultivated in the past. This area is often filled with seasonal produce, providing a glimpse into the more functional side of historic garden life. The orchard features traditional varieties of apples and pears, which once played a big role in the estates food supply, and the entire garden is often used for seasonal activities and events, especially in the spring and autumn months.
