Exploring Gunby House and Gardens.

A visit to Gunby Hall and Gardens in Lincolnshire is a delightful journey into the heart of English country life. Nestled at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds, this elegant red-brick country house—often described as a “country house perfect in scale, beauty and atmosphere”—offers visitors a wonderful blend of history, art, and natural beauty. Managed by the National Trust, Gunby Hall is surrounded by beautiful gardens, parkland, and orchards, making it a perfect destination for a peaceful and inspiring day out.

Gunby Hall was built in 1700 for the Massingberd family and has been described by the famous poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson as “a haunt of ancient peace.” The house remained in the family for over 250 years until it was given to the National Trust in 1944, along with its surrounding estate.

The Hall beautifully reflects three centuries of family life. Its architecture is a fine example of Queen Anne style, with graceful proportions and classic red-brick symmetry. Inside, you’ll find a treasure trove of art, antiques, and family heirlooms—each room filled with stories of the generations who lived here.

Stepping inside Gunby Hall feels like entering a private home rather than a grand museum. The rooms are warm, intimate, and beautifully decorated, giving a genuine sense of how the family lived.

  • The Ground Floor features the elegant Entrance Hall, with portraits of the Massingberd family and striking period furniture. The Drawing Room is full of light and charm, with delicate furnishings and artworks collected over centuries.

  • The Dining Room showcases a traditional Georgian table setting, complete with silverware and crystal, while the Library is lined with shelves of leather-bound books, offering a glimpse into the scholarly pursuits of the former residents.

  • Upstairs, the bedrooms retain their original character, with four-poster beds, embroidered textiles, and personal items giving an authentic sense of domestic life in the 18th and 19th centuries.

  •

Every room feels lived in, as if the family has just stepped out for a stroll in the gardens—a hallmark of National Trust’s careful preservation work.
