Roman Fort Foundations

The story of Cardiff Castle begins in the 50s AD when the Romans established a strategic fort on this site to subdue the local Silures tribe. Over time, four successive forts were built, with the final one constructed in stone. Today, visitors can marvel at the impressive remains of the Roman walls, a testament to their engineering prowess. These ancient ruins whisper tales of a time when the fort served as a critical military base and later as the inspiration for the area’s name, derived from Caer-Taff—fort on the River Taff.

 

Norman Stronghold

Following the Norman Conquest, the Castle transformed into a medieval stronghold. Robert Fitzhamon, Norman Lord of Gloucester, constructed the original wooden keep on the existing Roman foundations. This keep was later rebuilt in stone, standing proudly atop a motte that dominates the landscape. As centuries passed, additional medieval fortifications and dwellings were added, reinforcing the Castle’s role as a defensive bastion and a residence for nobility.
