Visit the amazing National Railway Museum in York where
you can walk and explore amongst magnificent machines
from the past, present, and future of the railways.
Within the engine shed, discover the curving gold lines on
the burgundy elegance of the Duchess of Hamilton,
view the last built steam locomotive of British
Railways the Evening Star, and view the fasted steam locomotive
in the world, the swept back elegant blue, the Mallard. Moving
on from the engine shed, discover the workings of steam in
the Wonderlab, delve into the North Shed and discover engine
and platform signs, station statues, and paraphernalia from
across the world of steam.
Moving on from the Railway Museum with just a nine minute walk, you can visit the walled city of the northeast of England that was founded by the ancient Romans. Its huge 13th-century Gothic cathedral, York Minster, with its medieval stained glass and two functioning bell towers. The City Walls form a walkway on both sides of the River Ouse.
Within the city there is a large cluster of winding streets displaying, thriving designer stores, independent shops and boutiques, with each distinct shopping area having its own speciality. Parliament and Coney Street are home to the high street favourites, as is Coppergate. There are many independent shops that are off the beaten track where you can view them at a wander along Gillygate and Petergate
